beat me to it

Hummingbird lived up to his name and put up a couple of blog posts last night about our Saturday evening out at a movie, restaurant and bar. I’m not sure I can add much more to what he said other than to also give my endorsements to all three. The Picture of Dorian Grey was very intense but also well worth watching. It’s an interesting adaptation and the screenwriters did an excellent job of interweaving Oscar Wilde’s words into a film set in modern times.

As for Cafe Luxy, make sure you are good and hungry for pasta as there is precious little else on the menu except soups and some appetizers. But as hummingbird notes, the pasta is excellent and the service impeccable. Also, I highly recommend the Santa Isabella Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile, available by the glass, 1/2 liter or bottle.

Finally, let me also say that 1181 is a really comfortable lounge with a great DJ and killer caipirinhas. Like he said, not a place for a serious conversation, but a great place to hang out, listen to music, dance a little and people watch.

Hipster Olympics

The following video is a brilliant tribute to Monty Python’s “Upperclass Twit of the Year” sketch (as they admit themselves). For all of you who love to mock the hipsters, this one’s for you:

More Than They Bargained For

18 08 2007

There is some controversy about the effectiveness of no-questions-asked gun amnesties, but I am generally convinced that they are a good idea. Yeah, the criminals are unlikely to be dropping off their guns, but the fewer guns (particularly handguns) the better in my mind. Less chance of a kid accidentally shooting themselves or of it being stolen and used in criminal activity. Maybe this is the wrong mental model, but my guess would be that lack of gun registration might be correlated with poor gun storage practices. However, when someone drops off a surface to air missile launcher, perhaps a few questions might be in order. This apparently happened during a Florida gun amnesty drive recently. He claims to have found it in a shed (whose shed and why in God’s name he would actually take it would be my first two obvious questions). Then he apparently tried to get rid of it at the local garbage dumps but they wouldn’t take it (which, of course, begs the question of why they didn’t call the police or the ATF). Come to think of it, why the f*ck didn’t he just call the police or the ATF? I would think they might be slightly interested in figuring out where this thing came from. All that’s necessary now to put this story over the top is for the NRA to come out with a pro-missile launcher position (missile launchers don’t shoot down planes, people shoot down planes! If missile launchers are banned then only the criminals will have missile launchers!).
