Music Review: Sekoya

3 07 2007

Another treat of the Vancouver Jazz Festival was a local band called Sekoya. This was another free outdoor concert in a park near the water, a perfect setting for this kind of show. This is how they describe themselves on their website:

“Sekoya’s complex compositional form, jazz influenced broken beats, sophisticated electronic sound manipulation, ground breaking vocal styling, socially and politically charged lyrics and intelligent horn arrangements are all in a genre defying singer/songwriter style.”

After seeing them live, I think that really does sum them up (though I might have used a little less hyperbole…but, hey, it’s their website and they have a right to promote themselves). In any case, they do have a great sound and put on a fun show. Amalia, the lead singer, has a real interesting presence on stage (you would have to when you wear an outfit like that … and no, I can’t describe it any other way…it’s interesting). The audience loved them and the band loved the audience back. Definitely a must see if you get the chance. Click on the photo below to see a slideshow of my shots from the concert and below that is a video from Youtube (though you might want to look at the videos on their site instead).

Music Review: Rastrillos

3 07 2007

The Vancouver International Jazz Festival just finished and while I unfortunately could not attend too many shows, I did get down to see some of the free outdoor concerts. One of those was Rastrillos, a reggae-ska band from Mexico City who put on a phenomenal show. I call them a reggae-ska band because those are their two most obvious musical influences, but that doesn’t quite do it justice. There aren’t many reggae-ska shows where you get some great Veracruzan music thrown in, hear a sitar (wish I could find a video of this), hear a song in Nawatal or get to listen to Afro-Chilango (hey, that’s how they described it…and from the crowds reaction, I think there were a bunch of Chilangos in the audience who loved it). They are extremely high energy, great musicians and really know how to get the audience involved and dancing. They’re playing another show in a couple of weeks, and I just might go ahead and see them again (and this time drag some of my friends along, they don’t know what they missed).

Unfortunately, the video I shot on my little Canon SD600 did not come out very well, so here are two from Youtube. On the second one, bonus points for those of you that recognize the tune. So here is a link to some photos from the show and two videos:
